이 책은 초등학교부터 고등학교에 이르기까지 과학교육과정에서 다루고 있는 천문 교육을 더욱 풍성히 하고자 과학교육과정의 수준에 알맞은 천체 관측을 소개하려고 노력하였다. 그러기에 모든 천체 관측은 맨눈과 소형망원경, 디지털카메라, 스마트폰카메라 등을 도구로 하고 있다.
