이 책은 기계설계 입문서로서 기계설계의 기본적인 핵심 내용을 간결하게 정리하여 설명하였고, 기사시험, 공무원 및 중등교사 임용시험 등의 수준에 적합하도록 책의 내용을 구성하여 실질적으로 도움이 되게 하였다.
이 책의 목적은 기계설계의 기본 개념을 파악하게 하는 데 있다. 이에 맞추어 기초가 부족한 학생들도 스스로 공부할 수 있게끔 문제 풀이 과정을 상세히 기술하였다. 연습문제는 주요 핵심 개념을 파악할 수 있게 하는 문제들로 구성되어 있으며, 특히 공무원과 중등교사 임용시험 문제를 많이 수록하여 각종 시험 준비에도 도움이 되게 하였다.
대부분의 대학 교재들은 연습문제 풀이를 해 주지 않지만 이 책은, 우선적으로 학생들이 관련 이론을 알게 하는 것을 목적으로 모든 문제의 풀이 과정을 상세히 기술하였다.
