도서소개
본 책의 주제는 제목에서도 드러나듯이 동양의 환경생태철학에 관한 것이다. 현대사회에서 가장 중요한 이슈 가운데 하나는 바로 기후변화와 환경문제라고 할 수 있다. 지구 온난화, 이상기후, 자연재해, 생태계의 변화 등의 문제로 인해 환경 파괴가 심화되고 있고 급기야 인류의 삶과 안전이 심각하게 위협받고 있다. 따라서 이와 같은 환경문제와 생태위기를 해결하지 않고서 인류는 더 이상 지속 가능한 삶을 보장받을 수 없게 되었다. 이러한 이유로 지구촌의 많은 국가들은 서로 협력하여 온실가스 배출을 규제하고, 탄소 저감 기술과 재생에너지 개발에 투자하며, 에너지 효율 향상을 위한 정책을 추진하고 있다. 하지만 이러한 정책만으로는 부족하다. 그보다는 환경문제와 생태위기를 불러일으킨 근본적인 원인을 찾아 제거하는 노력이 필요하다.
오늘날 환경문제와 생태위기를 촉발한 원인에는 여러 가지가 있겠지만 많은 학자들은 그 원인으로 근대사상이 낳은 인간중심주의, 기계론적 세계관, 전 지구적 산업화, 과학기술의 비약적인 발전, 자본주의 체제의 심화 등을 꼽는다. 그러므로 환경문제를 해결하기 위해서는 이와 같은 근대사유의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 대안을 마련하는 것이 절실하다. 이 책은 그 대안을 동양의 환경생태철학에서 찾고자 하였다. 다시 말해, 동양철학에 깃들어 있는 유기체론적 세계관, 인간을 타자와의 관계 속에서 바라보는 관계적 인간관, 화이부동(和而不同)에 입각한 천인합일의 생명관, 모든 존재를 평등하게 바라보는 법신편만(法身遍滿)의 평등사상, 무위자연에 입각한 생명 존중 사상 등을 통해 오늘날 환경문제와 생태위기를 극복할 실마리를 찾고자 하였다.

경북대학교 철학과를 졸업하고 같은 학교 대학원에서 동양철학(유가철학)을 전공하여 철학박사 학위를 받았다. 울산대학교 철학과 객원교수를 지냈으며, 현재 경북대학교 철학과 강사로 재직 중이다. 학문적 관심 분야는 유가철학, 성리학, 조선 사회정치사상 방면이다. 『사회정치철학』(한울아카데미, 2004), 『논리 그리고 비판적 사고』(도서출판 글고운, 2019) 등의 (공)저·역서가 있고, 『퇴계의 향약 분석을 통한 조선시대 자치조직 연구』(『대동철학』 제93집, 2020) 등 여러 편의 논문이 있다.
