이 책에서는 열역학을 주로 하여 기본적인 내연기관 이론과 관련된 문제를 함께 다루었다.
먼저 열역학의 기초 이론을 간략하게 정리하고 계산 문제와 관련된 내연기관기초 이론을 정리하였다. 연습 문제에 있어서는 공학뿐만 아니라 물리, 화학 등 여러 분야에 걸쳐 다양한 문제를 소개함으로써 기사시험, 공무원 시험 및 교사 임용시험 등을 준비하는 데에도 도움이 되게 하였다. 특히 2002∼2016년도까지 기계, 기계ㆍ금속, 기술, 항해ㆍ기관, 농공, 화공ㆍ섬유, 냉동, 물리, 화학 과목 등의 중등교사 임용시험에 나온 열역학과 내연기관 관련 문제들을 과목별로 나누어 수록하였다. 이들 문제들은 열역학을 공부하는 이공학도들에게는 흥미 있는 문제이고 아울러 교직 관련 학과 학생들에게는 임용시험을 준비하는 데 도움이 되리라 생각한다. 모든 문제들에 대해 문제의 정답을 수록하고 풀이 과정을 상세히 기술하였다.
