청소년기는 신체적, 정서적, 인지적으로 급격한 변화를 경험하는 가운데 자신의 정체감을 형성하고 진로를 결정해 나가는 시기이다. 따라서 청소년들은 안정적이지 못한 상황에서 자신의 개인적, 환경적 특성에 따라 건강한 전인적 성장 발달에 많은 어려움을 겪기도 한다. 사회는 청소년들이 겪고 있는 여러 어려움을 최소화하면서 건강하게 성장할 수 있도록 도와주어야 한다. 청소년들이 처한 어려움을 최소화할 수 있도록 돕기 위해서는 여러 문제의 실태, 원인 등에 대한 이해를 도모하는 것이 필요하고 적절한 지원방법을 제도화하고 지속적으로 개선해 나가는 것이 필요하다.
이 책에서는 청소년들의 건강한 성장발달을 돕기 위해서 청소년 관련 전공자들이 알아야 할 청소년의 학교폭력, 자살, 성매매, 약물남용, 흡연, 음주, 인터넷 중독, 가출, 학업중단에 대해 살펴보았다.
