그동안 우리나라의 교육사 연구는 전체사 위주로 이루어져 지역 교육사에 관한 연구가 미진하였다. 따라서 지역 교육사에 관한 자료가 충분한 관심을 받지 못하였고, 이에 따라 각 지역에서 실시된 교육의 구체적인 내용을 제대로 소개받지 못하였다. 물론 전국 광역 수준에서의 광역시도의 역사나 시도의 교육사에서 대체적인 내용은 소개하고 있다. 그러나 개괄적인 것이어서 그 구체적인 실상을 자세하게 알 수 있기에는 부족한 점이 많다.
비록 일본인들의 기록에 의한 것이지만 이 책은 우리나라의 부산에서 그 당시에 실시하고 있었던 근대적인 교육의 모습에 관하여 학교 명칭과 위치, 교직원과 학생 수, 재정 등 비교적 세세하게 기록하고 있어서 당시 부산 지역에서의 교육 실정을 파악하는 데 상당한 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라 앞으로의 교육사 연구 방향을 제시하는 나침반이 될 수도 있을 것이라 생각된다.
