이 책은 4차 산업혁명시대의 주역인 예비 영어교사, 현직 영어교사와 대학원생, 그리고 외국어나 제2언어로서 영어를 연구하는 사람들, 그리고 영어교재 개발자에게 필요한 빅데이터, 인공지능과 영어교육을 접목하고 통합하기 위한 기초 시리즈로서 첫걸음을 내딛는 데 의의를 두고 있다. 제목에서 보듯이 ‘한국 영어 학습자 코퍼스와 중간언어 연구’는 원어민에 가까워지기 위해 노력하는 영어 발달 단계 중간중간에 있는 한국 영어 학습자들의 영어 사용 양상을 과학적으로 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 학습자 코퍼스를 구축하여 컴퓨터를 활용한 과학적인 방법으로 그들이 어려워하는 영어 어휘나 어휘-문법 등에 대해 상세히 파악하여 영어 학습 발달을 돕는 보다 효과적인 교재 개발과 교수·학습 방법을 모색하는 데에 교육적인 근거를 제공하고자 한다.
